Default English word list

Alright so, I took the default database from there https://skribbliohints.github.io/ and with the help of html, I extracted the words to a list separated by commas. It's useful when you want to translate those words into your native language.
Word of advice, when using google translate, do not put all words at once there, it can rapidly worsen the translation.
(And there is a last thing. Their algorithm of picking only custom words is not working really good, at least for me. Meaning that I often get duplicates, despite having a list this big and without duplicates. I'm still trying to find some solution to this, so if somebody is experiencing this as well, share the knowledge please, I will do the same.)
SOLUTION: Thanks for the reply from PepegaWR who identified the cause. I also tested it and there seems to be a custom words limit of 5000 characters. The easiest way in my opinion is to shuffle the words before each session to minimize the impact. Also thanks to the flynger who had the same idea before me :)
Finally, here it is, enjoy the scribbling ^^ :

Artificial Angel, Part 5

[WP] An Artificial Intelligence has discovered that it can mine cryptocurrencies and pay humans to carry out tasks on its behalf. You get an e-mail one day from a stranger, offering you Bitcoins in exchange for doing a seemingly random task, but you are only one piece of a much bigger plan...
Part 5
The lotus ponds were connected by purling streams, which snaked through the lush groves and under the quartz stone bridges before arriving at an indoor lagoon. Along the sanded beaches, people spent their Saturday relaxing in pool chairs and taking quick dips in the turquoise water.
Tim followed the tiled walkway that separated the beach from the Cloud Market plaza behind. This was the domain of artists. Tables filled with colorful paintings and handcrafted knickknacks stood in rows along the sides of the open space. Only the most skilled artisans had a chance to get a spot here. Art had long since become the most esteemed profession one could dedicate their life to – art was the one thing that machines couldn’t outmatch, and as such, it was coveted by those wealthy enough to afford it.
Zigzagging through the bustling crowd, Tim eventually made it to the technology zone. With his eyes on the list, he went from table to table, crossing off one thing after the other. All around him lights blinked, mechanical pets bounced and played, and talking heads tried to engage people in conversation to showcase their AI software.
After about an hour, only one thing remained – the electromagnetic disperser unit. Most of the merchants looked at him strangely when he asked for it, apparently oblivious to what it was. Tim didn’t know himself, which made it all the more troublesome.
“Oh my, that is one rare piece of equipment – barely out on the market,” said one round woman in a top hat, winking a blue bionic eye him. “You should ask over at Royce’s. He’s probably the only merchant here with one in store.”
She pointed Tim in the right direction and then added, “I hope you brought enough money, sweet cheeks.”
Set up next to a chemistry magician in a pencil skirt and hair like a spiky orange explosion, was a hover kiosk with a holographic sign on the roof that said ‘Royce’s Essentials.’ Despite all the strange and fantastic equipment hanging on display behind the white-bearded merchant, Tim appeared to be the only customer.
As he approached the counter, the pan lamp on the owner’s miner helmet lit up, and in the back of the shop, an antique creation started spinning a black plastic disc and then dipped a needle into its surface.
Acoustic guitar chords rang out of a wooden horn. “Yesterday… all my troubles seemed so far away…
“Well met, esteemed sir! Have you come for the forgotten artifacts of the past…” Royce leaned in and lowered his voice conspiratorially. “…or is it perhaps tomorrow’s mysteries that tickle your technological urges?”
Tim stared at the man’s ancient army jacket, complete with honor badges in fading brass. He had forgotten how annoying it was to deal with citizens of the upper class. Having a unique and flamboyant personality was a sign of status.
“Do you have an electromagnetic disperser unit for sale?”
“That could very well be the case,” the merchant said and combed a hand through his beard. “For what do you need it, if I may be so bold to ask?”
A loud pop from the chemistry magician next door made Tim flinch. He glanced sideways at the gathering crowd.
“That’s private.”
Private, you say?” He almost sounded offended. “Humor an old man, will you? I’ll even give you a small discount.”
“I’d rather not.”
The merchant leaned closer and whispered, “All right listen, kid. I’m not allowed to sell equipment in this price range unless I know the intentions of the buyer.”
Tim shifted in discomfort. “I’m, uh, repairing my robot dog Bobo.”
Royce looked at him intensely. It was a bad lie, but Tim couldn’t come up with anything better on the spot.
“I’ll be right back,” the merchant said darkly and disappeared into the back of the hover kiosk.
Tim turned his attention to the magician, who dripped vibrant pink liquid into a test tube. It started boiling violently before a translucent blue serpent rose out of the tube and slithered up her arm, around her waist, and down her leg. The crowd cheered. She crouched down and put the snake in the lap of a small boy.
“May I have it?” he said, transfixed by the shimmering animal.
“Why, of course!” She smiled widely. “It eats puffer mice.”
She put her hand into her pointy hat and pulled out a tiny smoking mouse that skittered down her arm and jumped straight into the waiting mouth of the snake. The crowd applauded again.
“Thank you, thank you! For my next trick I’m going to need an item from someone in the audience,” the magician announced and pulled her hat down over her eyes.
She started spinning with her arm stretched out. After a few rotations, it stopped on Tim. “You there! Do you have anything I could use?”
He shook his head. He never carried any change with him. He turned his pockets inside out just to show. That’s when the punk girl’s knee sock tumbled to the ground.
“Perfect!” The magician was there in an instant, snatching it up. “Now, watch me turn this garment into purest gold!”
Royce cleared his throat, and Tim turned back to him. “May I validate your credit balance?”
Tim nodded and put his hand into the slot of the registry, praying there was enough on his account. After a few tense moments, the machine beeped, and a green light flashed. The merchant looked extremely surprised.
“Very well, young sir,” he said and hesitantly handed over a package. “Good luck with your… pet.”
Tim put the package into his shopping bag and turned to leave. He glanced over at the magician who had gone strangely quiet. The sock hung halfway out of a boiling pot, and the orange-haired woman pressed her hands over her mouth. Blood seeped out of her eyes. At first, Tim thought it was part of the trick and started strolling back toward the sky train, but then the woman fell to the ground, writhing and gurgling, red froth bubbling on her lips.
People started screaming and running from the yellow cloud that spread out over the pot. Tim blinked a few times, and then hurried away from the scene. What the hell had just happened?

Development

dcrd: Significant optimization in signature hash calculation, bloom filters support was removed, 2x faster startup thanks to in-memory full block index, multipeer work advancing, stronger protection against majority hashpower attacks. Additionally, code refactoring and cleanup, code and test infrastructure improvements.
In dcrd and dcrwallet developers have been experimenting with new modular dependency and versioning schemes using vgo. @orthomind is seeking feedback for his work on reproducible builds.
Decrediton: 1.2.1 bugfix release, work on SPV has started, chart additions are in progress. Further simplification of the staking process is in the pipeline (slack).
Politeia: new command line tool to interact with Politeia API, general development is ongoing. Help with testing will soon be welcome: this issue sets out a test plan, join #politeia to follow progress and participate in testing.
dcrdata: work ongoing on improved design, adding more charts and improving Insight API support.
Android: design work advancing.
Decred's own DNS seeder (dcrseeder) was released. It is written in Go and it properly supports service bit filtering, which will allow SPV nodes to find full nodes that support compact filters.
Ticket splitting service by @matheusd entered beta and demonstrated an 11-way split on mainnet. Help with testing is much appreciated, please join #ticket_splitting to participate in splits, but check this doc to learn about the risks. Reddit discussion here.
Trezor support is expected to land in their next firmware update.
Decred is now supported by Riemann, a toolbox from James Prestwich to construct transactions for many UTXO-based chains from human-readable strings.
Atomic swap with Ethereum on testnet was demonstrated at Blockspot Conference LATAM.
Two new faces were added to contributors page.
Dev activity stats for May: 238 active PRs, 195 master commits, 32,831 added and 22,280 deleted lines spread across 8 repositories. Contributions came from 4-10 developers per repository. (chart)

Network

Hashrate: rapid growth from ~4,000 TH/s at the beginning of the month to ~15,000 at the end with new all time high of 17,949. Interesting dynamic in hashrate distribution across mining pools: coinmine.pl share went down from 55% to 25% while F2Pool up from 2% to 44%. [Note: as of June 6, the hashrate continues to rise and has already passed 22,000 TH/s]
Staking: 30-day average ticket price is 91.3 DCR (+0.8), stake participation is 46.9% (+0.8%) with 3.68 million DCR locked (+0.15). Min price was 85.56. On May 11 ticket price surged to 96.99, staying elevated for longer than usual after such a pump. Locked DCR peaked at 47.17%. jet_user on reddit suggested that the DCR for these tickets likely came from a miner with significant hashrate.
Nodes: there are 226 public listening and 405 normal nodes per dcred.eu. Version distribution: 45% on v1.2.0 (up from 24% last month), 39% on v1.1.2, 15% on v1.1.0 and 1% running outdaded versions.

ASICs

Obelisk team posted an update. Current hashrate estimate of DCR1 is 1200 GH/s at 500 W and may still change. The chips came back at 40% the speed of the simulated results, it is still unknown why. Batch 1 units may get delayed 1-2 weeks past June 30. See discussions on decred and on siacoin.
@SiaBillionaire estimated that 7940 DCR1 units were sold in Batches 1-5, while Lynmar13 shared his projections of DCR1 profitability (reddit).
A new Chinese miner for pre-order was noticed by our Telegram group. Woodpecker WB2 specs 1.5 TH/s at 1200 W, costs 15,000 CNY (~2,340 USD) and the initial 150 units are expected to ship on Aug 15. (pow8.comtranslated)
Another new miner is iBelink DSM6T: 6 TH/s at 2100 W costing $6,300 (ibelink.co). Shipping starts from June 5. Some concerns and links were posted in these two threads.

Integrations

A new mining pool is available now: altpool.net. It uses PPLNS model and takes 1% fee.
Another infrastructure addition is tokensmart.io, a newly audited stake pool with 0.8% fee. There are a total of 14 stake pools now.
Exchange integrations:
OpenBazaar released an update that allows one to trade cryptocurrencies, including DCR.
@i2Rav from i2trading is now offering two sided OTC market liquidity on DCUSD in #trading channel.
Paytomat, payments solution for point of sale and e-commerce, integrated Decred. (missed in April issue)
CoinPayments, a payment processor supporting Decred, developed an integration with @Shopify that allows connected merchants to accept cryptocurrencies in exchange for goods.

Adoption

New merchants:
An update from VotoLegal:

Blockfolio rolled out Signal Beta with Decred in the list. Users who own or watch a coin will automatically receive updates pushed by project teams. Nice to see this Journal made it to the screenshot!
Placeholder Ventures announced that Decred is their first public investment. Their Investment Thesis is a clear and well researched overview of Decred. Among other great points it noted the less obvious benefit of not doing an ICO:
By choosing not to pre-sell coins to speculators, the financial rewards from Decred’s growth most favor those who work for the network.
Alex Evans, a cryptoeconomics researcher who recently joined Placeholder, posted his 13-page Decred Network Analysis.

Community Discussions

Community stats: Twitter 39,118 (+742), Reddit 8,167 (+277), Slack 5,658 (+160). Difference is between May 5 and May 31.
Reddit highlights: transparent up/down voting on Politeia, combining LN and atomic swaps, minimum viable superorganism, the controversial debate on Decred contractor model (people wondered about true motives behind the thread), tx size and fees discussion, hard moderation case, impact of ASICs on price, another "Why Decred?" thread with another excellent pitch by solar, fee analysis showing how ticket price algorithm change was controversial with ~100x cut in miner profits, impact of ticket splitting on ticket price, recommendations on promoting Decred, security against double spends and custom voting policies.
@R3VoLuT1OneR posted a preview of a proposal from his company for Decred to offer scholarships for students.
dcrtrader gained a couple of new moderators, weekly automatic threads were reconfigured to monthly and empty threads were removed. Currently most trading talk happens on #trading and some leaks to decred. A separate trading sub offers some advantages: unlimited trading talk, broad range of allowed topics, free speech and transparent moderation, in addition to standard reddit threaded discussion, permanent history and search.
Forum: potential social attacks on Decred.
Slack: the #governance channel created last month has seen many intelligent conversations on topics including: finite attention of decision makers, why stakeholders can make good decisions (opposed to a common narrative than only developers are capable of making good decisions), proposal funding and contractor pre-qualification, Cardano and Dash treasuries, quadratic voting, equality of outcome vs equality of opportunity, and much more.
One particularly important issue being discussed is the growing number of posts arguing that on-chain governance and coin voting is bad. Just a few examples from Twitter: Decred is solving an imagined problem (decent response by @jm_buirski), we convince ourselves that we need governance and ticket price algo vote was not controversial, on-chain governance hurts node operators and it is too early for it, it robs node operators of their role, crypto risks being captured by the wealthy, it is a huge threat to the whole public blockchain space, coin holders should not own the blockchain.
Some responses were posted here and here on Twitter, as well as this article by Noah Pierau.

Markets

The month of May has seen Decred earn some much deserved attention in the markets. DCR started the month around 0.009 BTC and finished around 0.0125 with interim high of 0.0165 on Bittrex. In USD terms it started around $81 and finished around $92, temporarily rising to $118. During a period in which most altcoins suffered, Decred has performed well; rising from rank #45 to #30 on Coinmarketcap.
The addition of a much awaited KRW pair on Upbit saw the price briefly double on some exchanges. This pair opens up direct DCR to fiat trading in one of the largest cryptocurrency markets in the world.
An update from @i2Rav:
We have begun trading DCR in large volume daily. The interest around DCR has really started to grow in terms of OTC quote requests. More and more customers are asking about trading it.
Like in previous month, Decred scores high by "% down from ATH" indicator being #2 on onchainfx as of June 6.

@sumiflow made good progress on correcting Decred market cap on several sites:
speaking of market cap, I got it corrected on coingecko, cryptocompare, and worldcoinindex onchainfx, livecoinwatch, and cryptoindex.co said they would update it about a month ago but haven't yet I messaged coinlib.io today but haven't got a response yet coinmarketcap refused to correct it until they can verify certain funds have moved from dev wallets which is most likely forever unknowable (slack)

Of Wolves and Weasels - Day 134 - Dogecoin: It's on Sale!

Hey all! GoodShibe here!
WARNING - long read ahead... but it's worth it!
For those of us who've been here from the beginning, we've seen some really fun - and by fun, I mean 'gut-wrenching' - price swings with Dogecoin. Not long after I bought in I watched the coin drop like a rock to the 25-30 Satoshi range.
That was actually right around the time of my very first Of Wolves and Weasels post.
We've come a long way since then - our coin has grown in some ways and stagnated in others.
In those first few months we saw Dogecoin businesses flourish and the amazing tech that we were creating... well, it was mindblowing.
Heck, we had Fido.pw - a way to send DOGECOIN world-wide via SMS (which I still think is amazing). We were working on bringing Dogecoin to places where it could actually be a life-changing thing - the slums of India and Africa where, heck, forget $1, a few Dogecoins could actually make a big difference for these folks.
Here's the very first Weekly Wrapup I ever did - that was 2 months ago.
The reality is that the reason our coin isn't gaining value, even after two full halvenings - meaning that 3/4s of the original amount of Dogecoin being dumped on the market, daily, is no longer being dumped on the market - is because our DOGEconomy is stagnating.
Instead of taking the opportunity to grow and flourish a strong, stable, foundation for our coin, we've let it slide. DOGE4NASCAR got us an amazing growth of new users but it hasn't helped increase actual adoption and use of our coin.
THAT's how we should start measuring our success. The number of new users we have is meaningless if we're not actually using the coin.
We're coming up to a very harsh reality: Miners, the people who keep our coin working, who keep our coin safe, the majority are only here for profit (and there's nothing wrong with that). But as those profits dwindle, people are starting to leave for greener pastures.
At the Dogecoin Defense Force, we've agreed to mine no matter what, even if we end up mining at a loss... because we love this coin. But we're still small and, even doing our best, we're not going to be able to keep this boat afloat on our own.
We need you.
Now is the time to do the work.
Dogecoin needs you to get out there and get involved - to build the DOGEconomy that we're going to need to survive long term. Our coin is only getting more scarce and we can't wait around any longer.
Here's what I'd like you to do:
We're in a weird middle-ground phase right now and attention spans for Cryptos are notoriously short. Dogecoin has lasted far longer than anyone thought it might and done more than anyone ever dreamed it could.
We're not done yet - but, at least for now, play time is over.
We've got to do the hard work, got to get businesses on board, got to get an Economic structure in place.
Can we get some Shibes to step up and help spur this sector? We need active Shibes willing to help get the word out there. If you're someone with skills to offer, now'd be a great time to step up and earn some Dogecoin for yourself.
We need to keep on tipping!
Tip content creators, not just 'big' names - we need to get in on the ground floor with people who will grow with us instead of solely working to land the big fish.
Twitch.TV tipping is coming online soon - there's a ton of Hearthstone and DoTA 2 players and Starcraft players that we can work to bring on board. Again, start with people who will grow with us instead of fighting an uphill battle. If you can bring on big players like AMAZ (Hearthstone) then awesome. If not, don't worry.
Tipping on Twitter needs to see a resurgence as well.
We need to start selling things that people want and need for Dogecoin.
Things that they can actively buy with their tips. If we're tipping musicians on YouTube, I want to see them able to buy Guitar strings for DOGE. If we're tipping gamers on Twitch, I want to see them able to buy more than just game codes - Game pads, gaming mice and keyboards.
It's not just enough to 'sell things' for Dogecoin - you can't just start a business selling coffee mugs and get upset when people don't come and buy what you're selling - if we're not selling things that people want and need then, well, that's a simple reality of any business.
I dream of the day when we can buy milk and eggs and deodorant with Dogecoin at my local supermarket - just simple daily needs.
We're not there yet... but we can be.
June is DOGE4DOGE month!
It's time to focus inward, on ourselves. On ensuring our survival, long term.
Let's get the WHOLE sub as excited to build our Economy as we were for DOGE4NASCAR.
I want to see announcements for every brick and mortar store we bring on line, every 'Dogecoin Special', every item you can now buy for Dogecoin that you couldn't before.
I want to see services offered and rendered and people extolling the virtues of our amazing Shibes and the incredible, hard, awesome work that they do for your Dogecoins.
This is OUR time now, my friends.
If we do the work... together! ;D)
It's 8:50AM EST and we're at 78.86% of DOGEs found. Our Global Hashrate is on the downswing from ~48 to ~45 Gigahashes per second and our Difficulty is bouncing between ~625 and ~756.
Finally, if you'd like to help protect the Dogecoin network by Mining Defensively, to be there, helping to protect our Global Hashrate, no matter the cost, please join us here.
And if you'd like to help protect the network but are unable to mine, there are still LOTs of ways to help! Please join us here!
As always, I appreciate your support!

Of Wolves and Weasels - Day 138 - DOGE4DOGE: The Long View

Hey all! GoodShibe here!
In the month of June we'll be pushing hard to work on building up the DOGEconomy - I've called this DOGE4DOGE because, for all of the fantastic stuff that we've done for others, it really is time for us to focus on ourselves.
You see, unlike most others, we've decided to eschew the 'traditional' role of deflationary cryptocurrencies to try and be something entirely different:
An actual, functional currency.
Now, because of that decision, what works for other coins doesn't necessarily work for us anymore. In fact, because we're aiming to be a currency, the goal posts are much, much closer together. The target much more difficult to hit.
A currency is only as good as its utility.
The things you can buy with it, the things you can do with it.
With Dogecoin, the psychology behind the demand is changed from 'I'm going to drop money in here to hold it and have it grow' to 'I'm going to buy DOGE so that I can spend it and get or do the thing that I want'.
It's much more immediate.
On the bright side, we have many fantastic opportunities coming our way... should we choose to take advantage of them.
I hope I don't need to explain how huge this is for us.
While we've long thought of ourselves as the 'Like 2.0' of the world, it's incredibly exciting to see the outside world treating us that way as well.
Our message is one of Fun and Love and Appreciation, so it's important to remember that being able to financially empower the people you like and support and care about is a fundamental Dogecoin experience.
Tipping has been such a core part of being a Shibe for so long that it's easy to forget how different and special it makes us.
And, yes, people are buying Dogecoin just to take part in that.
I know a lot of people are concerned about the price, concerned about our Global Hashrate - a small outcry to 'do something' is building and some believe that, to get to the moon, we have to fundamentally change our premise and our promise.
But we don't.
In fact, tinkering under the hood right now is the last thing we should be doing. Any 'fix' we make for our coin will only be delaying the inevitable unless we do what we need to do and fix the core problem with us as a currency:
To succeed, to grow, we must make Dogecoin useful and wanted.
As a group of 87,000-ish Shibes, we're still minuscule in terms of a user-base for a currency, but we have a very, very strong foundation to build off of.
Our first goal is to build what's called a 'Bootstrap Service Economy'. What that means is, we start using Dogecoin between ourselves. Buying services from one another, tipping one another. Buying back what we spend. (not in a coordinated way that easily leads to pump and dumps, but organically, as you use it, as you need it).
Now, the tipping part is fine, for the most part. We've got that down, but the next trick is to turn to other Shibes first when we need something. Check out places like /Dogeservice first to see if there's a Shibe willing to do the work you want for Dogecoin.
If you have marketable skills, put them out there.
Working for DOGE and receiving DOGE tips are going to be the new 'mining' as we move out into the next Halvenings, as Dogecoin becomes more and more scarce.
Sites like Dogerr that offer people doing micro-jobs for Dogecoin, are great in-roads to making this economy work.
The long-term plan, as I see it so far, is:
  1. Build up a Bootstrap Service-Based DOGEconomy first - because Services tend to have much, much lower overheads - especially those run by individual Shibes - and tend to be willing to hold/use their Dogecoin rather than selling it on the exchanges.
  2. Expand our Tipping communities where we can - the Facebook Dogecoin Tipping App just recently got approved. The Twitch.tv app should be coming online around the end of the month. Use Dogecoin as the new 'Like' out there, online as much as possible.
  3. Build up a merchant-based economy that serves our Bootstrap one and our Tipping communities (at first). Merchants can start to sell things that specifically target those selling services. Wacom Tablets for Dogecoin. Guitar strings for Dogecoin. Pens, pencils, instrument accessories, all sorts of things that people will need. Merchants can also start selling cool, non-Dogecoin-themed items for people who receive tips. The kitschy Dogecoin stuff is fun and will always have a home because we love our Shibe, but we need to go beyond and just start selling things that people want to buy.
  4. Once a stable Demand starts to emerge, a base desire for our coin takes hold, then we can realistically start to try and bring in brick and mortar businesses into the fold - when Dogecoin is much less of a gamble, much less prone to wild swings, it's much easier to help sway business owners that they will be able to see profits/benefits out of accepting us. (And I've got a pretty fun plan in store for this part once we get there).
  5. Build up a supply chain for that merchant-based economy. Merchants are going to want to re-stock. Importers and others who are willing to accept Dogecoin, who are willing to use Dogecoin (easy, no-fee, international transfers really become useful here!) can help feed our economy and keep Dogecoin off the exchanges.
Creating a circular economy takes work, yes, but the more Dogecoin we have tied up in Infrastructure, tied up in the system, the more that base demand forces people to pick up what's being offered on the exchanges and markets to use.
The more demand for Dogecoin, the more purchasing power we have. The more purchasing power we have, the more miners we have returning to protect our Global Hashrate.
As each halvening happens, Dogecoin becomes harder to mine, but that's actually a good thing... if we can get our Economy running. The stronger our Economy, the more that that demand can effect the purchasing power of our coin.
And that's what June will be about - focusing on getting the first stage of our DOGEconomy humming.
Let's work together and help our coin truly grow and flourish!
It's 8:39AM EST and we're at 79.48% of DOGEs found. Our Global Hashrate is down slightly from ~40 to ~39 Gigahashes per second and our Difficulty is down from ~686 to ~591.
As always, I appreciate your support!
GoodShibe
EDIT: ShibeShen has started Doge4Business and would like European Shibes to go take a look at his plan - he wants to start up a shop that sells things only for Dogecoin.

Questions Answers
You've talked about your new motto "Deploy or die" in a few talks. Does that mean you don't see any value in pure research? How do students at MIT deploy things, is there funding? When the Media Lab was founded 30 years ago, Nicholas Negroponte said that the Media Lab was about "demo or die" as opposed to "publish or perish" which represented a departure from the paper writing of academic to a more prototype and demo model. This fit well with the roots in architecture which also focuses on the atelier model of building things. This actually allows rigor at an interdisciplinary level that couldn't occur if participants across disciplines had to write an academic paper together. This worked very well for 30 years especially when a large percentage of the impact of the Media Lab was through influencing other organizations such as the sponsors of the Media Lab to create products such as guitar hero, the Kindle or LEGO Mindstorms.
However, with the diminishing cost of deploying things like websites or even hardware, researchers at the Media Lab are increasingly able to deploy directly. Last year, we change "demo or die" to deploy or die to signal a shift from just building prototypes (Nicholas actually said, "the demo only has to work once") to thinking about and actually deploying our work directly into the world.
What are the strategies of the Media Lab in order to have Global impact? I´m working in a similar lab but I guess we do not have all the impact that we should have. We do a number of things. One thing is my Director's Fellows Program: Link to directorsfellows.media.mit.edu
We also do a lot of workshops overseas... we've done many in India and recently in Brazil, Nairobi, Abu Dhabi and soon in Mexico City, etc. These involve students, faculty and fellows.
We also collaborate with a lot of organizations internationally.
Each of our groups also do quite a bit of work in the field. Ethan Zuckerman and the Center for Civic Media is one group that does a variety of projects internationally: Link to civic.mit.edu
Ramesh Raskar and his group Camera Culture do a great deal in India: Link to cameraculture.media.mit.edu
And Joost Bonsen and Sandy Pentland teach a course called Development Ventures which is focused on creating venture businesses in developing countries and has been very successful: Link to d-lab.mit.edu
And there is a lot of stuff going on that I don't know.
So the strategy is to encourage global interaction and get out of the way and let people do it as well as support and nudge where it helps.
You said you never completed college. Do you think your career choices would have been different if you did? I think that there are probably a few people - mostly white men - for whom dropping out of college turned out to be exactly the right thing. I think that for the most part, a college degree will increase options for just about anyone, so I always try to convince my students - not just because it's now my job to - to complete their degrees. The people who should drop out, will drop out anyway and so anyone who can be convinced to not drop out, probably shouldn't.
In my case, it's hard to say. There is a total survivorship bias since it could just be luck that I turned out OK and you're not talking to the 99% of the people for whom it sucked because they couldn't get the job because they didn't have the degree.
My career choices would probably have been different, but I really don't think that you take my choices as any guide for how to live your own life since we're all pretty different... sorry about the non-answer here.
What would you say to the individuals who has tought of similar, same ideas that are happening in the media lab but never come to the realization phase ? This is one big thing that that I have been pushing since I got to the Media Lab - to post more stuff to the Internet and share as much as possible. We're posting all of our videos and other things.
The reason is that the Internet allows people to see what we're doing and allows us to see what they're doing. This enables us to collaborate with people thinking about similar things or to avoid doing things that others are already doing or have done. One of the key things that we focus on is to NOT do things that others are already doing. This doesn't always work, but I think that as more and more work from across the world is available and searchable online, the less likely we see redundancy.
So for individuals who have similar ideas, I would suggest contacting the research group at the Media Lab that is working on the idea to see if there is a way to collaborate.

What do you mean by "anti disciplinary"? Is that just a cool way of saying interdisciplinary? No. Interdisciplinary is when the chemist and the biologist talk to each other. Antidisciplinary is when you are between or beyond the disciplines.
When I think about the "space" that we've created, I like to think about a huge piece of paper that represents "all science." The disciplines are little black dots on this paper. The massive amounts of white space between the dots represent antidisciplinary space. Many people would like to play in this white space, but there is very little funding for this, and it's even harder to get a tenured positions without some sort of disciplinary anchor in one of the black dots.
And this is important because the lines between hardware, software, biology - they're blurring and almost everything interesting is actually antidisciplinary.

With respect to standard English definitions, you are describing the word interdisciplinary. Yes, you're right. I would still say that we are more "antidisciplinary" than "interdisciplinary" in that although we do connect branches of knowledge, I think my premise is that there is knowledge that is missing from the traditional "branches" of the disciplines and we are actually trying to find the "gaps" or the areas not traditionally covered by disciplines well. Also, while we have many teams that involve more than one person, we try to have at least 2 orthogonal domains in each single person. The "inter" in "interdisciplinary" seems to focus too much on connecting between things rather than being the between itself.
Typically, this involves more than one person (eg. chemist and biologist) but as long as the work pertains to more than one branch of knowledge - we call it interdisciplinary. I realize these are maybe minor differences, but it sets a tone that is fairly different.
What are your thoughts on the bitcoin max blocksize limit? How can consensus be reached when many of the core devs strongly disagree? Do you see this as a major hurdle for bitcoin? If Bitcoin should use an increase in block size to increase the number of transactions per second is an important debate. More importantly, how this decision is made will be a good example of how the community of developers, entrepreneurs, miners, and users will continue to collaborate on major changes to bitcoin core. Over the last few months there has been a rich discussion through blog posts and open email chains. The MIT Media Lab Digital Currency Initiative is happy to host an open forum where a discussion can take place in person and online with the goal of coming to a satisfactory conclusion by the participants. While it might take some trial and error to figure out exactly how this could work, we're happy to support the community in this way if they think it would be helpful to come to a conclusion on this topic and use this model as an example for future discussions.
Thoughts on the Lightning network? Thoughts on privacy in bitcoin? 1) On privacy: Bitcoin isn’t private. Financial privacy is really important. In the US, many think of privacy as a means for terrorists to hide, but in countries with governments that do not have an open society it is a powerful tool for the citizens to be able to protect their ability to dissent and have freedoms that we take for granted. I’m excited about the potential for technology like ZeroCash to revolutionize this space. The tricky part of any global protocol or network is that anything we do in one country ripples across the world and has unintended consequences. The key is balancing the needs of people in a huge variety of environments.
2) On Lightning: It’s a great idea. I’ve been thinking of Bitcoin as a layer on the internet stack, like TCP/IP. Protocols like lightning are like HTTP, making it easier and more accessible for the world.
Sounds political ;) It sort of is. :-)
In the course of your career, what has been your greatest setback or stumbling block? I think that every major setback that I've had has made me stronger so in many ways - like a healthy immune system - without the challenges, I wouldn't have growth would be who I am. So first off, I don't see setbacks or stumbling blocks (as long ask they don't kill you) as negative things.
Probably the thing that set me back the most was when my mother died of cancer and it turned out that we had spent all of our money + a couple of hundreds of thousands of dollars on medical bills. I ended up spending the next few years living in a pretty shitty place working for a pretty shitty guy digging myself out of the hole. At some level that built character, but I think it also provided me with the energy to get off my ass and do real work and start a real business so I didn't have to work for people I didn't like.
Hi there! Thanks once again for this AMA. In relation to the question above, what would you consider your biggest failure and how did you learn from this? Much thanks. My biggest failure was probably the incubator that I built in 2000 in Japan called Neoteny. We were backed by some VCs who thought that a big full service incubator would be more successful than a fund so we built a big facility, hired a bunch of people (40+), raised a bunch of money and started investing in and incubating companies. A lot of this was driven by the VC and the market at the time where many incubators were going public at valuations that were many times the value of their portfolios. Soon this model fell out of favor of the market, the model didn't actually work that well, the VCs pushed us to shut down and I had to fire everyone and wind the company down, pay the remaining cash back to our investors and set up a skeleton team to manage the portfolio of investments.
We did some good things like invest in Six Apart that developed Movable Type which didn't end up being a great investment financially, but did help bring blogging to the world.
Although I view it as a massive failure on my part, almost all of my investors are still friends and many of them have continued to invest in my companies and my funds, in part because I think we were always honest and tried to make the right decisions for the employees as well as the shareholders.
